You could choose a lighter or darker shade for the backsplash instead, and have all your countertop areas (including your island's) in the one colour. Also, consider that once everything is done up and you have equipments (toaster, coffee-maker, etc) on your countertops, you'll have much less visible space and you won't feel its overkill at all.
