I’m remodeling a kitchen and going to tile the floor. Is it better to tile underneath the cabients?
scanjet asked:
The kitchen is small only 8 x 13 and two walls will have cabinets. I was told that future home owners will probably change the floor before changing the cabinets. I want to go ahead and tile underneath the cabinets. What is better????

If you don’t tile under the cabinets you will have to raise them up off the floor slightly…..even the dishwasher. Else if the dishwasher has to be replaced you may not be able to get it out. Tiling under the cabinets makes it easier since everything is at the same level. I wouldn’t worry about future home owners. It will be their problem………

I wouldn’t because if a future homeowner decides to change the tile it will be difficult to cut out the tile if it is under the cabinets. My husband is a contractor and the cabinets always go in before the tile goes down.
Toe kicks are created on the cabinets so that you don’t have to raise the cabinets and all appliance are made to adjust…they have feet on them, so before installing make sure they sit above the tile….do not make this a problem for the next homeowner…if you were to sell it and not disclose it, YOU COULD BE SUED! Do it the right way the first time.

Don’t put the tile under the cabinets, With the weight of the cabinets will ***** the tile in the grout line. The new owner will not be able to get a clean cut where the tiles begin and end. The new owner will be upset and may talk bad about you and if you want to sell more property a job well done will be better for you.

A better look would be to go with Pergo style laminate wood floors.

Yes it is better as if you don’t tile it you will have an uneven floor plus any water leaking can cause the ground level to alter. Also mold will collect.

When I had my new kitchen installed, the contractor set the cabinets up on 1/2″ plywood, cut to the size of the base of the cabinets.. This was so that the stove and dishwasher would be high enough that if I put in a tile floor later (which I did) they could be pulled out without loosening the countertop. The plywood was covered by the kickplate around the base of the cabinets and the dishwaser and stove.
This way you don’t have to worry about the tile cracking from the weight of the cabinets and appliances. You can remove the kickplate and tile right up to the plywood. When you replace the kickplate it will look like the tile goes under the cabinets.
Edited: When I said to put the plywood under the cabinets, I meant under the stove and dishwasher also. Basically, he just put down plywood the same size as the cabinet base and then set the cabinets and appliances on top of it. Not the refrigerator, that was set directly on the floor.

I usually suggest to do tiles before cabinets for two reasons.
1- If in the future you decide to modify the layout of your kitchen you dont have to worry about looking for tiles( to put where there are none) or destroy where you want to add a cabinet.
2- I believe that it looks nicer when cabinets are sitting on top of tiles than grout/tile against the cabinet. In addition your floor will probably be leveled better with the tile on.
just my 2 cents.
