I’m remodeling my kitchen. Do I get the new floor before installing cabinets or after?
flexikid asked:
I’m gutting the kitchen… should the floor go in first or should I have the cabinets install first and have the floor meet up with the edge of the cabinets?

After. We remodeled a coupld years back and had put the floor in first but ended up using different cabinent lengths or something. We ended up pulling the floor up and starting over.

Get the floor in first – makes life much simpler. Remember that few things in any house are straight or level.

We have redone our kitchen and put the floor in first, it is alot easier to put cabinets over floor than trying to do it the other way around.

cabinets first, don’t want to mess up your new floors with construction. also if theres any pattern to the flooring it needs to go off the cabents not where they are sitting.

I would do the floor last just in case you paint and you don’t have to worry about drips and any scrapes or scuffs on the floor.

Cabinets first… You can mess up the floor. Plus why the HECK spend extra money for floor tile etc that will be UNDER a cabinet?
If it is a WOOD floor can you imagine water damage to it?
If tile could you imagine putting a NEW floor down with a cabinet on top?
It’s about Sensibility, not being cheap.
If you are doing a tile floor then you need to go to the CENTER of the room, measure to find this. Pop a chalk line and look for square both east /west – north /south .. Stand up, look at it just to make sure.. Sometimes true measurements VIA walls, cabinets don’t look right. Adjust spacing of tiles from this point, just lay them down with no glue, set, mastic, etc… One row East/West and the other North/South. This just lets you know how much you can move. (You don’t want to be left with a 2” tile. That king of thing. Looks stupid and if it is ceramic or has more chance of breaking or coming loose.)
At the cabinets in order for it to match up under the kick plate you can add a piece of ¼ round. But you want the tile or whatever to be a decent fit. (No large gaps)

i would put the floor down first. if it is done wall to wall then you shouldnt have any problems with cabinet fitting. happy remodelling!!
